A childhood friend or a tortured captive?

Disney, I say the name and my head fills with stars, bright colours and happiness.

As a child watching Disney films I saw animals as companions and was shown that animals laugh, cry, run, dance, sing, and have emotional feelings like humans, except for Scar, he was a very bad cat!

In Disney films we are shown to share with animals as they are like us and vice versa. We have a duty to save animals from danger and give them protection.

My favourite film was ‘The little Mermaid’, but not forgetting ‘Aladdin’, ‘The Lion King’, ‘Pocahontas’ and ‘Mary Poppins’. Some of my favourite characters are animals; Sebastian, Flounder, Abu, Iago, Rafiki, Timon, Pumbaa, Shenzi, Meeko and of course the dancing penguins!

But what went wrong, where did the love go? As time passed and I became a teenager the care and happiness I felt towards animals, my duty to love and protect them slowly disappeared. I can’t say exactly when it happened, but it did.

Pinnacle to this, did you know Mickey Mouse will be 90 tomorrow!?

I believe we all have a sweet spot for Mickey and his companions, Minnie Mouse, Pluto, Goofy, Donald Duck and Daisy Duck, but how has his friendly face not made an impression on the reality that thousands upon thousands of mice are used for medical research and cosmetic testing annually?

Mickey Mouse has made people all over the world smile, his ears are iconic, yet we continue to kill and torture innocent little mice globally when it isn’t necessary.

Are mice our companions or tortured captives?
